Wild Card vs Daily Conservation Fees: When It Pays Off
Every person entering Kruger pays a daily conservation fee (unless covered by a SANParks Wild Card or equivalent exemption). For a short trip the day fees are simple. For longer stays—or multiple SANParks visits in one year—a Wild Card can save real money.

Children are typically 2–11 years; under-2s are usually free. Check Fees for the exact age bands.
What a Wild Card Is
A SANParks Wild Card is an annual membership that covers conservation fees at participating parks (including Kruger for most card types). You still pay for accommodation, activities, and any park-specific extras—you are not buying free lodging.
Card prices and cluster options change; buy only from official SANParks channels and match the cluster to the parks you will actually visit.
Break-Even Thinking (Simple Math)
Ignore accommodation. Look only at person-days inside the park.
Example A — International couple, 5 full park days
- Day fees: 2 × 5 × R602 = R6,020
- If an All Parks / appropriate Wild Card for two adults costs less than that and you have no other SANParks trips, compare carefully.
- If the same couple also visits Addo or Table Mountain National Park the same year, the card often wins faster.
Example B — SA family, 4 days (2 adults + 2 children)
- Day fees: (2 × 4 × R134) + (2 × 4 × R67) = R1,072 + R536 = R1,608
- SA residents often need fewer park days for a card to break even—unless they visit multiple parks or return several times a year.
Example C — SADC pair, 7 days
- Day fees: 2 × 7 × R275 = R3,850
- Long SADC self-drives are classic Wild Card candidates once you confirm card pricing for your nationality cluster.
When Daily Fees Are Usually Enough
- One short Kruger trip (2–3 days) and no other parks that year
- Travelling with many children where card pricing for the whole family is steep
- Last-minute trip where you cannot activate a card in time
When a Wild Card Often Wins
- 5+ park days for international visitors
- Multiple SANParks destinations in 12 months
- Repeat Kruger visits (e.g. two long weekends plus a week-long safari)
Do Not Forget
- Fees are per person, per day, charged on entry or via overnight booking flows depending on how you book.
