Kruger 5-Day Self-Drive Itinerary (First-Timers)

Five days inside Kruger is the sweet spot for most first self-drives: enough time for real wildlife rhythm without turning the trip into a transfer marathon. This plan stays in the south + central — the densest road network and strongest Big Five odds for newcomers.

If you only have three nights, use our 3-day itinerary. If you have a week, keep this spine and add two nights around Satara or Olifants.

Book camps on SANParks as early as your window allows — peak winter dates fill months ahead.

Day 0 — Arrive outside or early entry

Drive or fly to the Lowveld the afternoon before if you can. Overnight in Hazyview / Malelane / KMIA area, then enter at first light through Phabeni, Paul Kruger, or Malelane.

Pay conservation fees (or show Wild Card). Download offline maps in the Kruger Companion app before you lose signal.

Day 1 — Southern river country

Base: Lower Sabie (first choice) or Skukuza.

  • Dawn exit toward the Sabie River loops and productive tar/gravel connectors.
  • Midday rest in camp (heat + quiet viewing from decks).
  • Late afternoon short loop; be back before gate close.

Related: Lower Sabie–Crocodile Bridge day, best routes south.

Day 2 — Still south, slower pace

Stay put. Do not change camps every night on a first trip.

  • One longer morning drive (waterholes + river roads).
  • Optional SANParks sunset or night drive from camp if available.
  • Use picnic sites only at official stops — see picnic sites.

Day 3 — Transfer toward Satara

Move north without rushing. Treat the transfer as a game drive, not a highway.

  • Exit early; aim for Satara with time for an afternoon loop.
  • Predator country opens up on the central plains — see Satara predator routes.

Day 4 — Full Satara day

  • Dawn + late afternoon drives; rest midday.
  • Sit waterholes rather than chasing kilometres.
  • Optional night drive if you want nocturnal predators.

Day 5 — Exit or soft finish

Options:

  1. Morning drive, then exit via Orpen / Paul Kruger / Malelane depending on your onward plan (getting there).
  2. Or drop south again for a final night if you booked six nights total.

How many days is enough?

  • 3 days: taste of the south
  • 5 days: real first safari (this plan)
  • 7 days: add Olifants / Letaba or a slower south split — still avoid trying to “do the whole park”
