Kruger Rules & Etiquette
Respect the wild, protect the animals, and ensure a safe experience for everyone by following these essential park regulations.
At wildlife sightings
Stop on the side of the sighting — keep the other lane free
This rule appears on the official Kruger visitor flyer and is enforced throughout the park. When you stop for animals, you share a working road network — not a private viewing spot.
- 1.Pull over on the same side of the road as the sighting, as far to the edge as you safely can.
- 2.The opposite lane must stay clear at all times so traffic can pass or move on.
- 3.Never stop in the middle of the road or park diagonally across the driving lanes.
- 4.If both lanes are already blocked, do not squeeze in — wait or drive on.
Driving Regulations
- Stay on designated public roads at all times.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel.
- Remain inside your vehicle (no protruding limbs).
- Adhere strictly to camp and gate opening/closing times.
- All general SA traffic laws apply (valid driver's license required, zero alcohol limit when driving).
Wildlife Interaction
- Never feed or attempt to touch any wild animal.
- Provide animals with the right of way; never block them.
- Maintain a safe distance (at least 20m-50m).
- Do not use calls or noises to attract attention.
Photography & Tech
- Avoid flash photography; it startles the animals.
- Drones are strictly prohibited inside the park.
- Selfie sticks are not allowed near dangerous game.
- Use binoculars for close-up viewing.
Noise & Conduct
- Keep noise levels low to avoid disturbing wildlife.
- Strict silence in rest camps after 21:30.
- No loud music or hooting at sightings.
- Speak in moderation when others are nearby.
Prohibited Activities
- No pets allowed (domestic or wild).
- Do not remove any plants, stones, or material.
- Strictly no littering – take your rubbish with you.
- Drones, skateboards, and bicycles are prohibited.
Gate & Camp Rules
- Strict silence in rest camps after 21:30.
- Be inside camp/gate before closing times.
- Check-in at 14:00, check-out by 10:00.
- Late arrivals are subject to heavy fines.
Official Protocols
- Declare all firearms/weapons at the gate.
- Day visitors: No alcohol is permitted in vehicle/possession.
- Carry valid ID for all adult visitors.
- Kruger is a malaria zone; consult a doctor.
- Roadside assistance emergency number: 0800 030 666.
Road & Vehicle Limits
- Only exit vehicle at designated points.

- Vehicles >4,000kg restricted to tar roads.
- Motorbikes and open vehicles (non-safari) prohibited.

A Warning to All Visitors
Kruger National Park is a wild environment. Penalties for breaking these rules can range from heavy fines to permanent bans from all South African National Parks. Most importantly, rules are here for your safety – an elephant can destroy a vehicle in seconds, and a lion can easily kill you if you are exposed or provoke it.
