What to Wear on a Kruger Game Drive (You Don’t Need a Costume)
Short answer: wear normal outdoor clothes. Comfortable trousers, a light shirt, closed shoes, and a layer for dawn. You do not need a “safari costume,” matching khaki set, or boutique bushwear to enjoy Kruger. Muted, natural colours are still recommended — they are practical, not a dress code.
The myth: you have to dress up for safari
First-timers often think a game drive means:
- Full khaki outfits bought specially for the trip
- Wide-brim “explorer” hats as a uniform
- Expensive branded bush shirts so you “look the part”
That pressure comes from lodge marketing and film tropes — not from how self-drive Kruger actually works. Rangers and regular visitors dress for heat, dust, and long hours in a car, not for a photoshoot.
You will see everything from rental-car travellers in jeans and a T-shirt to locals in trail trousers. Animals care about movement and scent far more than your colour palette.

- Breathable T-shirt or light long-sleeve (sun + mosquitoes)
- Thin fleece or softshell for winter mornings and open windows at 05:30

- Avoid stiff new denim that rubs on long drives

Colours: recommended, not a costume
Prefer muted, natural colours — olive, stone, brown, muted green, soft khaki. They hide dust better, look less harsh in photos, and make you slightly less conspicuous near animals when you are out of the vehicle at camps or picnic sites.
That is a practical preference, not a rule that you must buy a matching safari outfit. One neutral shirt and dark trousers already cover most days.
Skip bright neon, loud logos, and pure white if you can — they show every dust streak and stand out in every group photo.
