What to Pack for a Kruger Self-Drive Safari (Season by Season)

Packing wrong for Kruger means sunburn, dust in your lens, or a 05:30 scramble in the cold dark. Pack right and you focus on wildlife—not discomfort.

This is a practical packing guide for self-drive visitors staying in SANParks camps or nearby lodges, organised by season and use case.

The Non-Negotiables (Every Season)

Documents

• Valid driver's licence (SA or international)
• ID or passport for all adults
• SANParks booking confirmation (printed or offline screenshot)
• Vehicle registration papers if required

Vehicle

• Spare tyre, jack, wheel spanner (check before you leave home)
• Tyre pressure gauge; deflate slightly for gravel if experienced
• Cooler box with ice bricks
• Phone mount for offline GPS maps
• Charging cables and 12V car charger (power bank for phone)

Wildlife viewing

• Binoculars (8x42 is the sweet spot for most visitors)
• Camera / phone with space for photos
• Kruger Companion app installed with offline maps verified

Safety & health

• Malaria consultation if visiting northern/lowveld zones—see Malaria page
• Insect repellent
• Sunscreen SPF 30+
• Basic first-aid: plasters, antiseptic, pain relief, any personal meds
• Torch or headlamp (red-light mode ideal)

Clothing Philosophy

Neutral colours: khaki, olive, brown, stone. Avoid bright white and neon—you stand out to animals and in photos of dust.

Layers beat one heavy jacket. Dawn is cold in winter; by 10:00 you shed everything.

Closed shoes for picnic stops and camp walks. Flip-flops are for the bungalow only.

Summer Packing (November – March)

Hot, humid, afternoon thunderstorms.

Skip: heavy fleece, excessive formal wear.

Winter Packing (May – August)

Dry, mild days, cold mornings (can dip to single digits Celsius before sunrise).

Best game viewing season for many species—pack warmth for the hours that matter.

Shoulder Seasons (April, September, October)

Variable—pack summer base + one warm layer. Mornings cool, middays hot.

Food and Drink

Self-catering units need groceries from camp shops (limited range) or towns outside gates (Hazyview, Nelspruit, Phalaborwa).

Bring or buy:

• Water (more than you think)
• Coffee/tea for early starts
• Braai supplies if self-catering
• Snacks for the car—no messy crumbs if monkeys nearby

Alcohol: allowed in camps for overnight guests; day visitors may not possess alcohol in the vehicle. Know your category.

Toiletries and Camp Life

• Biodegradable soap where possible
• Sandals for showers
• Washing line pegs (handy)
• Universal plug adapter (South African Type M)

Power in camps: plan devices charged by evening; load-shedding can occur outside park too.

Photography Extras

• Beanbag for window rest
• Lens cloth for dust
• Extra memory cards
• No drone (strictly prohibited)
