Best Gates by Arrival City: Where to Enter Kruger
Choosing the right entrance gate saves hours of driving—and sometimes avoids real safety risk. Match your gate to where you land or sleep the night before, not to whichever name sounds familiar.
Quick Match Table
| You arrive from… | Prefer this gate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| KMIA / Nelspruit / White River | Phabeni or Paul Kruger (Skukuza) | Closest practical south/central access; good roads |
| Johannesburg / Pretoria (JNB) via N4 | Malelane, Crocodile Bridge, or Paul Kruger | Depends on whether you aim south or central |
| Hoedspruit / Orpen Lodge belt | Orpen | Direct into central cat country (Satara region) |
| Phalaborwa / Letaba area | Phalaborwa Gate | Northern/central access without looping south |
| Punda / Far North | Punda Maria | Only sensible entry for Pafuri / north itineraries |
Always confirm gate times for your travel month before you leave the hotel.
KMIA, Nelspruit & White River
Most international fly-in itineraries land at Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA). From White River or Hazyview:
- Phabeni Gate — often the cleanest drive for Pretoriuskop / Berg-en-Dal / south-west camps.
- Paul Kruger Gate — best if your first night is Skukuza or you want the shortest path into the central south.
Avoid planning a “scenic detour” that adds unknown dirt roads on day one when you are tired from flights.
Johannesburg & Pretoria
Self-drivers from Gauteng typically use the N4 east:
- Malelane Gate — strong for Berg-en-Dal and the south-west.
- Crocodile Bridge — excellent if Lower Sabie is your first camp.
- Paul Kruger — if Skukuza is the hub of a short trip.
Build buffer for tolls, fuel stops, and the last supermarket run before the gate. Once inside, shops are limited and prices rise.
Orpen & Hoedspruit
If you sleep in Hoedspruit or the greater Orpen corridor, Orpen Gate is the obvious choice. It drops you into the Satara plains—prime for lions and general game in the dry season. Do not enter at Phabeni “because friends did” if your accommodation is near Orpen; you will burn half a day relocating.
Phalaborwa
Phalaborwa Gate suits Letaba, Olifants, and north-central loops. It is also a practical exit if you are flying out of Phalaborwa or continuing to the northern private reserves.
Numbi Gate — Prefer Alternatives
Avoid approaching Numbi Gate when you can use Phabeni or Paul Kruger instead. The approach roads have had elevated crime risk reports over recent years. Prefer Phabeni (nearby) or Paul Kruger for most White River / Hazyview itineraries. Check our Gates guide for the current Numbi advisory before you travel.
Day Visitors vs Overnight Guests
Day visitors and overnight guests use the same entrance gates, but overnight guests must also be inside their booked camp by closing time. Your entrance choice should align with where you sleep—not only with the shortest pin on Google Maps.
