How to Book SANParks Camps Without Mistakes

Kruger’s rest camps sell out—especially Lower Sabie, Skukuza, and Satara in peak season. Most booking stress comes from misunderstanding the release window, not from the website itself. Use this checklist before you click “Pay.”

The 11-Month Window

SANParks typically opens Kruger overnight bookings about 11 months in advance. Popular units for school holidays and long weekends disappear within hours or days of release.

Mistake to avoid: Waiting until “three months before” for Lower Sabie riverfront or Satara in July. By then you are hunting cancellations, not choosing freely.

Step-by-Step Booking Flow

  1. Decide region first — south (Skukuza / Lower Sabie), central (Satara), or north (Letaba / Shingwedzi). See North vs South Kruger.
  2. Pick camps that match drive times — do not book Berg-en-Dal and Punda Maria on consecutive nights unless you enjoy a very long transfer day.
  3. Create / verify your SANParks profile before release day—ID numbers, passport details, and payment method ready.
  4. Be online at release for peak dates; have plan B camps open in another tab.
  5. Book conservation fees / Wild Card as applicable—see Fees and Wild Card vs daily fees.
  6. Read the confirmation for unit type, dates, and gate notes. Save a PDF offline.

Private Lodges vs Rest Camps

Private lodges (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, etc.) use different booking systems and usually include guided game drives. Rest camps are self-drive bases with à-la-carte activities. Do not mix the two in your head when comparing prices.
