Best Kruger Camps for Families

Traveling to Kruger National Park with children is incredibly rewarding — but not every rest camp suits families equally. Pools, safe walking trails, and midday activities matter as much as game viewing. Here are the top SANParks camps for families.

1. Skukuza (The Capital)

Skukuza is the largest camp in Kruger and often feels more like a small town than a remote bush camp. For families, that is a strength.

  • Facilities: Multiple swimming pools, a 9-hole golf course (hippos sometimes wander the fairways), a large shop, post office, bank, and several restaurants.
  • Activities: The Stevenson-Hamilton Knowledge Centre is an excellent museum for a midday break. Lake Panic hide is nearby and reliably active.
  • Vibe: Bustling and busy — kids will not feel out of place making normal noise.

2. Berg-en-Dal (The Modern Choice)

Berg-en-Dal is one of the newer main camps, set in a mountainous landscape unlike much of the park.

  • Facilities: A large modern swimming pool with a grassy play area.
  • Activities: The Rhino Trail along the camp fence is a safe walking trail where families often spot rhinos grazing metres away on the other side.
  • Wildlife: The surrounding area is excellent for leopard and wild dog sightings.

3. Lower Sabie (The Scenic Hub)

Lower Sabie sits on the banks of the Sabie River and books out months in advance for good reason.

  • Facilities: The Mugg & Bean deck overlooks the river — families can watch hippos, crocs, and elephants while eating.
  • Activities: Sunset Dam, just outside the gate, reliably delivers hippos and crocodiles within minutes of leaving camp.
  • Tip: Book as early as SANParks allows.

4. Letaba (The Elephant Hub)

Letaba is the greenest main camp, with wide lawns stretching to the Letaba River.

  • Facilities: Pool, restaurant, shop, and excellent shaded lawns for children to unwind.
  • Activities: Elephant Hall museum features the tusks of the Magnificent Seven — one of the best educational stops in the park for kids.

Family tip: Choose family cottages or guest houses where possible. They offer more space, private kitchens, and a relaxed environment between drives.
